iPhone 5 rumours: what you need to know

iPhone 5 (or the iPhone 5G, as some are calling it) rumours are flying thick and fast already. Will there be a rush release to erase memories of the iPhone 4's antenna problems? Maybe not - with the Verizon iPhone 4 Apple showed it wasn't afraid to tweak the current iPhone design.

Will the 5th generation iPhone deliver ultra-fast mobile internet? Will it ever end up on Verizon in the US? Let's raid the iPhone 5 rumour fridge to find the tomatoes of truth amid the stinky stilton of baseless speculation.

The iPhone 5 release date will be in the summer…

Apple's established a rhythm with iPhone releases, with new models appearing in late June or early July each year. It's a safe bet that the iPhone 5 release date UK and US will also be late June or early July. As Beatweek magazine points out, Apple's A-Team can't be everywhere at once; by staggering the releases of the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5, they get to work their magic on both devices.

Motorola Xoom Review

As we put rubber to road on our Motorola Xoom review, it's important to note that it was only a matter of time before the Android army delivered a proper iPad competitor. Moto's partnership with Google (and use of the 3.0 version of its mobile operating system, Honeycomb), has made that assumed inevitability a very serious reality. There can be little question that the Xoom is certainly a contender for the hearts and minds of potential tablet buyers in the market. Besides boasting that fancy new software (a completely redesigned experience masterminded by the man behind webOS, Matias Duarte), the Xoom is equipped with formidable hardware. The 1GHz, NVIDIA Tegra 2-based slate boasts a sizable 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 capacitive display, 3G connectivity (Verizon on our review unit), along with front and rear facing cameras, HD video capability, and loads of wireless options. Not only is the Xoom clearly competitive (and frankly, more stacked) than most of its competition, Motorola has attempted to futureproof the device by offering a free hardware upgrade down the road which will give the tablet access to Big Red's 4G LTE network. Of course, all this power comes with a cost... literally. With a list price off contract of $799, the Xoom is quite a pricey piece of technology to own. Still, with all that's packed inside -- and more importantly with what Google has done on the software side -- the Xoom could represent the next stage of tablet evolution. Is it time to take the plunge? Read on for our definitive answer in the full Engadget review!

The Xoom is a handsomely built tablet, though at a glance, you'll think you've seen this before. Maybe it's that little can be done within the constraints of the tablet form factor (or Motorola isn't really trying), but the general shape and build of the Xoom comes off looking just a teensy bit like the iPad's longer, more dangerous cousin. The back and sides of the device are a similar, machined metal (though Verizon's version is painted a matte black, which is a real fingerprint magnet), the corners are similarly curved, and the front is, of course, all screen. That's not to say the Xoom isn't good looking -- it is -- but there isn't much original going on with the general industrial design that's at play here. And that's okay by us.

At 9.8 inches wide by 6.6 inches tall (with a thickness of a half inch), the device isn't massive (albeit a little unwieldy when held in portrait), and its 1.5 pound weight gives it heft without killing your arms -- though it still strains your muscles a bit if you're holding the tablet up for an extended period of time. The Xoom is clearly meant to be used in landscape mode more than portrait (though it can be rotated any way you prefer). If you're holding the tablet in that orientation, you'll find the front facing camera sitting dead-center between the Motorola and Verizon logos along the top of the glass display. On the left side of the device, there are two volume buttons; along the top is a slot for a future LTE SIM and microSD card (more on that in a moment); on the bottom you'll find a Micro USB and mini HDMI jack, along with dock sensors. Around the back of the device, Motorola has weirdly chosen to place the power / sleep button next to the camera lens and flash -- and those components are flanked by stereo speakers. We had a lot of issues with both the volume buttons and power button on the device; we found the volume keys difficult to find and use as they're extremely shallow and placed right next to a notch in the casing of the device. The power button was even worse; we didn't mind the placement so much, but like the volume buttons the single, small circle is extremely shallow -- and worse, it got stuck a number of times when we were using it! Instead of waking the device up or putting it to sleep, we were prompted to shut down the Xoom. Hopefully this is just a random issue with our unit, but it didn't give us warm and fuzzy feelings about the build quality.

After a rapturous reception at Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson was keen to show off its Xperia Arc, Neo and Play devices to those that will be selling them – the retail staff.

And last night (23 February), retail staffers from up and down the country got a sneak peak and a chance to play with the devices before their official launch next month.

Every network and store was invited to a cinema in Haymarket where they were treated to a £5 Cineworld voucher, popcorn, chocolate and drinks, and the chance to experience PlayStation 3 games on a 40 foot cinema display. The Sony Ericsson brand machine was full swing with slogans flashing up on screen such as 'the future of mobile gaming is upon us' as dramatic music played in the background.

The presentation, which included training on the Android 2.3 OS, highlighted the Xperia brand values and the Sony Ericsson Vision. It aimed to recruit retail staff to the Sony Ericsson’s Ambassador program, which gives retailers the opportunity to own and win Xperia handsets, vouchers and other Sony products. In exchange, staff get to be heard as an honest retail voice, giving Sony Ericsson advice on what customers – and they – want. Blackberry Playbook

The makers of all things Blackberry, Research in Motion Ltd, will roll out the "Blackberry PlayBook" tablet computer next year so we will all have to just wait until then. The Blackberry Playbook will be launched in North America in the first quarter of 20100, with a global launch scheduled for the second quarter of 2011.

There seems to a lot of demand for tablets with quite a bit of interest from worldwide retailers in the Playbook. Incidentally, Blackberry seem confident that in the coming quarters they can surpass the sals volume levels achieved by Apple. Fighting talk from Blackberry - we will have to see whether they can really do this.

RIM are been shy about what carrier they will use and the exact price and have only said that the Blackberry Playbook will sell for under $500.

The Blackberry PlayBook is a 7-inch tablet computer that will run on a new operating system built by QNX Software Systems, a Research in Motion unit that makes software used to run everything from cars to nuclear reactors.

The device will have a 1 gigahertz dual-core processor with front and rear facing cameras and a video conferencing facility. It seems that RIM have looked at what the Apple iPad does not do and introduced it to the Playbook. The Playbook supports Adobe Flash technology so will load flash websites that the iPad fails to load. It will also have the ability to multi task which is something that a lot of Apple iPad users have complained about the lack of this with the iPad. However, whether this is will be true multi tasking or the applications just sit inactive in the background like on their phones, remains to be seen. But with 1 GHZ processing power, the potential for multi tasking looks promising. According to RIM, the Playbook will also be good for videogames too.

Competition in the tablet pc market is becoming much fiercer and RM is seeking to grab a piece of the fast-growing and competitive tablet market. Samsung Electronics recently announced that it intends to sell more than one million of its Galaxy Tab tablet computers by the end of the year and is looking to launch other sizes. Apple has so far sold more than seven million iPad units but RIM are confident they can surpass that with the Blackberry Playbook

To throw even more into the tablet pc mix, Amazon have said they will create a Kindle e-book-reader application for the PlayBook. Interesting!

The Playbook is much smaller than the Apple iPad with a 7 inch screen compared to the 9.7 inch screen of the iPad. When you see the Blackberry company co founder Mike Lazaridis using it at Adobe Max, he seems to be peering at the screen a bit. His fingers looked a bit stubby for the screen too. I can see that if you have very big fingers you may find the screen fiddly, but without seeing the Playbook in the flesh, one can't be sure.

What Can You Do With a Google Nexus S?

Samsung and Google have both teamed up to bring to the world the amazing Nexus S smart phone, but appreciating this beauty of a phone is not quite the only thing one can do. The device is filled to the brim with features and functions; and here is a quick list of some of the simplest things you can do to make the experience a lot better.

First off, bring back the comma to the onscreen keyboard; this is an issue since a new button, the “voice input” button, has taken over the spot where the comma originally was. Good thing is, there is a simply setting that one can adjust to fix this. Simply go straight to the Android keyboard settings and turn off the voice input keyboard button.

If you tend to keep an eye on your phone’s energy consumption; Google allows users to see an in-depth view of how the phone makes use of the battery. There is a graph you can check at the “About Phone” menu and click the battery icon to see the full breakdown.

For many, managing apps is one of the biggest chores in any smart phone (even for the iPhone). Fortunately, there is one menu in the Android OS that lists down everything you have downloaded and installed, and it also provides a one hit button for un-installation procedures: the Android Market. Oddly enough, this online menu still keeps a great deal of content, even telling you of apps you installed but have forgotten.

Anyway, we may have suggested that the voice button be removed from the virtual keyboard, but the bottom line is that voice is the big new function for the handset. There is voice search, voice commands and even voice dictation for writing down long notes. It is fast and surprisingly easy to do, not to mention the fact that Google’s hardware and software for detecting voice is uncanny.
